Creating password protected blogs

One of the most frequent questions we get about our new blog feature in Famundo for Organizations is if teachers can make their blogs password protected, so it is NOT visible to the general public. The answer to this is YES, just like everything else in Famundo, there are multiple levels of security.

Let me explain how this is done.

First thing you need to do it to add a Member Group. This will create a username and password that your students can use to log in to view your blog.

Go to Setup > Organization Settings > Members

Click on Add > Add New Group Member

Login Name: this is the username for logging in.

Name: give this group member a name.

Password: this is the password for logging in.

Confirm Password: confirm your password.

Click on Save

Now, you can proceed to create your blog, which only your newly created Members can view.

Click on the Blogs tab on the top banner.

Click on Add Blog (you can also create a new blog by clicking on Add Article)

Assign to: you can assign this to your school or any other user (this means if it is Edit Access = Private, only the Assigned to user can edit the blog)

Name: enter a name for your blog.

Edit Access: enter who you will allow to edit this blog.

View Access: All Staff and Members only (this will insure that the public will not be able to view this blog)

This blog will be viewable by those with Member credentials and above. The public will not be able to view it.

Your students can now visit your Famundo site, log in with the username and password you created above, and view your new blog.

Famundo has Blogs!

The latest release of Famundo adds a new, fully featured blog engine to its already complete solution for families.

Yes, we know, there are already a number of very good blog programs out there, why did we decide to make another one?

Our idea is to create a one-stop, turn-key solution for familes so everything they need is right there in one single application. This is especially important for families who are just jumping onto the internet for the first time.

Each member of the family can have their own blog, or you can create a family blog to share with your family and friends.

It’s easy to get started. Simply go to your Family Library and click on add blog or add article. Enter your information and you are ready to go.

There is no need to publish, since it is already online, you just need to let your friends know how to locate your blog.

Here is a sample blog I created on my own Famundo site

Parenting Blogroll Project

Having some free time this weekend, I did more research on my Parenting Blogroll project and came up an astounding list of over 300 parenting blogs!

I’ve taken my prior list off the sidebar, since it would be too long to be practical, and placed a link to another page.

To be honest, I’ve only had the opportunity to look over about 50 or so of them, there may be broken links, old links, and of course, the need to be somehow categorized.

If you see any errors or ommissions, please let me know.

Parenting Blogroll - ever expanding

You may have noticed the Parenting Blogroll on the sidebar has been growing recently. My hope is to compile a comprehensive list, perhaps categorizing it to make it more manageable and useful.

If you have any suggestions for additions, add it in comments, or send me an e-mail at richard.kuhlenschmidt@famundo.com.

Dad Blogs and Mom Blogs - a roundup

The Charlotte Observer has a article on how dad blogs (and mom blogs) are increasingly becoming a a place where parents can come together, share their experiences, and learn from each other.

After adopting his daughter in 2002, Doug Henderson of Mooresville had trouble finding online parenting tips for dads.

That’s why a year ago, Henderson says, he created DadBloggers.com, an online message board that gives fathers an outlet to share their parenting experiences from a man’s perspective.

There is also a good roundup of other parenting blogs. Here are the ones listed.

A must for all bloggers

Did you ever wonder whether it was email or e-mail? Web site or website?

The Chicago Manual of Style, the bible of the publishing and research community is now available on your desktop.

It’s completely searchable and pretty easy to use, providing answers to your style and editing questions.

Here is their answer regarding web site/website.

It seems they also prefer e-mail.

Nickelodeon starts social networking site for parents

Nickelodeon has launched a new social networking site for parents according to this article in Online Media Daily.

The new site, ParentsConnect.com, is aimed at adults who grew up with the network at its launch 27 years ago and are now parents themselves, said Kyra Reppen, general manager of ParentsConnect.com and NickJr.com, owned by Nickelodeon parent MTV Networks.

Reppen said that the new site was part of a larger play toward parents. In December of last year, Nickelodeon purchased GoCityKids.com, a local listings site for kid-friendly activities, which now powers the local listings on ParentsConnect.com.
