Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Wed, 16 May 2007 03:29:00 GMT

This is VERY cool. Scratch is a FREE programming language that is designed specifically for kids ages 8 and up.

Developed at MIT, Scratch makes it easy to create interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art—and share them on the web.

It works on both PCs and Macs.

Download it here!

Kids and money

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Fri, 13 Apr 2007 02:31:00 GMT

Now that tax time is over, I decided it was time to upgrade my aging version of Quicken. While I was on the Quicken web site, I saw that they have a new product out called Quicken Kids and Money.

I was tempted to demo it, but then noticed that it is geared for kids age 5 through 8, and my kids are well beyond that.

Anyway, after looking over the description, it didn’t seem like they were offering very much for the $69.99 per year they are charging for this product.

It seems that there is a lot of free information out there, such as The Mint, which will do basically the same thing.

Anyone have any experience with Quicken Kids and Money, let us know what you think.

KidsClick! search engine for kids!

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Sun, 21 Jan 2007 22:36:44 GMT

Via BloggingBaby, there is another new search engine for kids, KidsClick.

KidsClick! was created by a group of librarians at the Ramapo Catskill Library System, as a logical step in addressing concerns about the role of public libraries in guiding their young users to valuable and age appropriate web sites. And, much like a library, KidsClick has categories to help find results on certain topics like Science and Math, The Arts, Society and Government. These categories allow you to focus in on your topic and get more relevant results. KidsClick! is ad free, but there is one one caveat

KidsClick! is not an Internet filter. It does not prevent client web browsers from being used to surf any URL address that the user inputs. It is intended to guide users to good sites; not block them from “bad” sites. However, it could be used in conjunction with a filter product where law allows filters to be used.

If your child is doing research for school, KidsClick is worth looking into.

Via LifeHacker there is a new search engine, Zoo.com, that promises to protect kids from inappropriate web content by filtering out sexually explicit material.

Zoo makes searching the Internet easy by bringing together results from the best search engines and content providers around. Using Zoo to search the web gets you results from Google, Yahoo!, and Wikipedia. When you search using the news tab, you see the latest from ABC, Fox and Yahoo! News.

Add this one to your arsenal of parenting tools.

Kids and Money

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Wed, 15 Nov 2006 23:55:16 GMT

How do you teach kids about money? They certainly don’t learn anything about it in schools. And maybe that’s all for the better since it should be the parent’s responsibility. I recently gave a merit badge course for my son’s scout troop on financial management to a group of 13 and 14 year olds. Most of them knew nothing about managing money.

Getting Rich Slowly has some good thoughts and lots of link with more information. Read it here: How do you teach Kids the Value of Money.

AOL to make kids portals free

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Thu, 19 Oct 2006 20:16:57 GMT

According to an article in USA Today, AOL will make it kid-oriented services free.

The teen-oriented beRed service formally launches Friday at beRed.com, while KOL for kids ages 6-12 and KOL Jr. for those 2-5 kicks off Tuesday at kol.com and koljunior.com.

When AOL started giving away its content nearly two years ago, it kept kids-oriented services restricted, figuring parents would be willing to pay for peace of mind. But after seeing its subscriber base plunge anyway, the Time Warner online unit decided in August to make those portals and other features free as well.

The shift to free will expose kids and teens to more ads — even for those who continue to pay as much as $26 a month for Internet access.
