Making Skype calls from Famundo's address book

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Tue, 15 May 2007 14:38:00 GMT

You can make Skype calls directly from your Famundo address book by simply using the Skype extension for Firefox or Internet Explorer.

These extensions will turn the phone numbers in your Famundo address book into buttons, which you can click to call from Skype, as in the example below.

Welcoming Rod Turner to Famundo

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Wed, 09 May 2007 04:41:00 GMT

We’d like to give a very hearty welcome to Rod Turner as the newest member of the Famundo team.

I am very pleased to be working with the Famundo team,” said Turner. “I have been watching them for a while, and I have observed that they are absolutely dedicated to making a big difference in the family and group scheduling market, in part by listening closely to what the customer wants, and then satisfying the customers by providing it through Famundo’s innovative products and services. I expect great success for Famundo.

Rod comes to us with an impressive pedigree. Rod was formerly CEO of Knowledge Adventure, which you may know was a pioneer in the development of multimedia educational software, and played a key role in building two software industry giants, Symantec Corporation (SYMC) and Ashton-Tate.

During his more than eight years as Symantec’s executive vice president and as the general manager of its Peter Norton Utilities Group, Rod was pivotal in growing revenues from zero to $250 million per year and in the company’s 1989 initial public offering (IPO). He launched the Norton AntiVirus in 1992.

As the first vice president at Ashton-Tate, Rod was instrumental in establishing dBASE as the PC industry’s standard for database management, and in the company’s IPO in 1983.

Rod was also a seed investor in AskJeeves.com, which had a successful 1999 IPO.

We are delighted to have Rod on the team.

The Dangerous Book for Boys (and Girls?)

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Tue, 08 May 2007 13:40:00 GMT

This book is very cool. It is unforunate though that the title seems so exclusionary, since my daughter thoroughly loves it, as I’m sure a lot of girls will.

The Dangerous Book for Boys by Conn and Hal Iggulden, reaches back to an era before Xbox and Gameboys, when kids would spend their summers building forts, shooting tin cans with slingshots and skimming stones on a clear lake.

This book was a bestseller in the UK last year and this release has been revised for an American audience.

Included in the American edition are topics such as

  • The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
  • Stickball
  • Slingshots
  • Fossils
  • Building a Treehouse
  • Making a Bow and Arrow
  • Spies-Codes and Ciphers
  • Making a Go-Cart
  • Navajo Code Talkers’ Dictionary
  • Cloud Formations
  • Skimming Stones
  • Making a Periscope

It is a lot of fun for everyone in the family, even girls!

More OLPC News

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Tue, 01 May 2007 03:08:00 GMT

This is a project I have been following for a while now and find it interesting that the the nonprofit One Laptop per Child project may reverse its previous position of not distributing their kid-friendly laptops in the United States.

We can’t ignore the United States. ... We are looking at it very seriously,” Nicholas Negroponte, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology academic who founded the project, told analysts and reporters.

The machines would go at a higher price to U.S. schools, he said, because more resources are invested in American education than in developing nations, even in the poorest U.S. regions.

Save the planet, save your energy costs!

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Mon, 23 Apr 2007 15:56:00 GMT

Now you can save money as well as saving the planet by replacing your burned out incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient compact fluorescent (CFL) light bulbs.

Imagine if people all over the world mobilized to replace one billion standard incandescent light bulbs with energy-efficient compact fluorescent (CFL) light bulbs. What would that mean? It would mean that those people would save money each month on their electricity bill. It would mean they would save enough energy to light tens of millions of homes for a year. It would mean the prevention of greenhouse gases equivalent to the annual emissions of millions of cars.

If you want to join the Famundo group and add your changed bulbs to the 5 bulbs I have already replaced, click here.

Our stats are displayed on the Famundo OBB sidebar graph.

Kids and money

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Fri, 13 Apr 2007 02:31:00 GMT

Now that tax time is over, I decided it was time to upgrade my aging version of Quicken. While I was on the Quicken web site, I saw that they have a new product out called Quicken Kids and Money.

I was tempted to demo it, but then noticed that it is geared for kids age 5 through 8, and my kids are well beyond that.

Anyway, after looking over the description, it didn’t seem like they were offering very much for the $69.99 per year they are charging for this product.

It seems that there is a lot of free information out there, such as The Mint, which will do basically the same thing.

Anyone have any experience with Quicken Kids and Money, let us know what you think.

Managing a Shared Parenting Family

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Thu, 05 Apr 2007 05:22:00 GMT

I just received an e-mail from someone asking how effective Famundo would be in managing a shared parenting situation.

Because of Famundo’s has different permission levels, it is ideal for use in a shared parenting arrangement.

Since Famundo is internet based, both parents have access to the same Famundo site. Each parent can view their childrens’ schedules, so they know when they are available, when they need a ride or to be picked up. And, if their schools are using Famundo, their school schedules are filled in automatically, so neither parent has the chore of inputting the daily schedule.

But, since each parent has their own login, they can have their own private events, lists and documents.

If you have any questions on using Famundo, please send me an e-mail at the address found on this page.

Helping kids while you're drinking your cup of joe.

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Wed, 04 Apr 2007 01:12:00 GMT

This is a really nice idea.

Mission Grounds Gourmet Coffee sells gourmet coffee grown on “Fair Trade” farms and 100% of their profit goes to support children living in orphanages in Russia, Costa Rica, Venezuela and South Africa. .

We offer gourmet coffee in simple bags that will make a difference. You have the opportunity to purchase an exceptional bag of coffee at a great price and help a child at the same time. We currently have no overhead to speak of and 100% of our profits go to support children missions. Since we are a Non-Profit Corporation all of our proceeds will go to other non-profit mission organizations.

Check them out.
