Famundo now has photo storage!

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Tue, 24 Jul 2007 02:12:00 GMT

We are very pleased to announce that we have added online photo storage to our Family Library. This is in addition to the Library’s existing file storage, family vault and blogs.

Here is a screen capture of what the album view looks like.

Just like everything else in Famundo, you can set the ownership and view access. For the photos, like the blogs, the default view access is set to public to make it easier to share with your family and friends. .

To share your photos, you can send an e-mail to your family and friends by either selecting their e-mail addresses from your address book or input them manually.

Photos can also be displayed on the public homepage.

Enjoy!

Getting your family hooked on Famundo

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Sun, 15 Jul 2007 21:00:00 GMT

I have to admit, it even took some time for me to get my family hooked on Famundo. But now they’re hooked. In fact, we’ve even turned Famundo into a verb, “Why don’t you Famundo that” or “Would you Famundo this for me?”.

Here is how I got them hooked. We have a main computer in the family room which is always on. Everyone in the family uses it for various activities.

I made my Famundo calendar page the homepage for my browser, FireFox, and I leave the browser open all the time.

Now, everyone can easily glance at the calendar if they need and since Famundo is already open, it’s a snap to add something to the grocery list or look up someone’s phone number.

To make your Famundo calendar your browser’s homepage, you can follow the instructions below.

1. Log into Famundo. (I logged in as myself, since I don’t have anything private and this gives full access to everyone)

2. Do the following, depending on what browser you are using:

FireFox
  1. Click on Tools > Options on the main menu.
  2. Click on the Main icon
  3. Click on Use Current Pages button
  4. Click on the OK button.
Internet Exlporer
  1. Click on Tools > Internet Options on the main menu.
  2. Click on the General tab
  3. Click on Use Current button
  4. Click on the OK button.
Safari
  1. Click on Edit > Preferences on the main menu.
  2. Click on the General icon
  3. Click on Set to Current Page button
  4. Close the Preferences window. .

Protecting Student's Privacy Online

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Thu, 12 Jul 2007 16:44:00 GMT

The internet is a powerful and cost-effective way to distribute information to a large group of people. This is especially true for schools. A school can post their schedule online where students and parents can get up-to-date information quickly and easily. It is hard to imagine any school not having their own website today with some sort of schedule information on it.

But there have concerns raised recently about who has access to this information. Just as this information is available for viewing by the student body, it is also viewable by those who don’t have the best of intentions. Predators can have easy access to information such as what time school gets out or where a field trip might take place.

Famundo solves this problem by providing multiple layers of permissions (5 layers to be exact) to their online calendar solution, so only those given permission have viewing access.

How does this work? A school creates a Members Group that has a single sign in and password.

This information is distributed to the student body, which can then log in to see their schedules. No one without the sign in and password would be able to view it. A new Members Group can be created every year or as often as necessary.

The default view access for events should be set for All Staff and Members Only, so that going forward, any events will only be viewable by someone who has the correct sign in and password.

For those events that you want viewable by the public, such as a concert or sporting event, can be set on the fly when creating the event.

We would love to hear from you about any ideas or suggestions on ways you have used Famundo to solve problems within your family or organization. Thank you.

Our new Famundo product blog

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Tue, 10 Jul 2007 01:49:00 GMT

We are changing things around here at Famundo, at least in terms of our blogs. In the past this blog has included a smattering of parenting news, technology news, and other miscellaneous odds and ends along with the Famundo product news.

This blog is now being repurposed to be the Famundo product blog exclusively (well as exclusively as we ever get here ;-). We have so many new users and so much going on with the product itself, that we need this venue to get information out to you as soon as possible. I’ll be joined by my other colleagues at Famundo to post more frequent news, tips, tricks and other ideas about Famundo.

We will still be maintaining our Dev Blog, for those of you who are really interested in what is the behind Famundo and we will soon be launching a new family oriented blog that will be available to all of our family users to post ideas, stories, news etc. relating to their family lives.

Thank you again for your interest in Famundo. Stay tuned for more news!

Famundo has Blogs!

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Thu, 21 Jun 2007 09:50:00 GMT

The latest release of Famundo adds a new, fully featured blog engine to its already complete solution for families.

Yes, we know, there are already a number of very good blog programs out there, why did we decide to make another one?

Our idea is to create a one-stop, turn-key solution for familes so everything they need is right there in one single application. This is especially important for families who are just jumping onto the internet for the first time.

Each member of the family can have their own blog, or you can create a family blog to share with your family and friends.

It’s easy to get started. Simply go to your Family Library and click on add blog or add article. Enter your information and you are ready to go.

There is no need to publish, since it is already online, you just need to let your friends know how to locate your blog.

Here is a sample blog I created on my own Famundo site

What are those new icons for?

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Tue, 19 Jun 2007 00:45:00 GMT

I apologize for not getting the Help system updated already, but we have been very busy with even another new build due out in the next week or so.

So you may have noticed some new icons throughout Famundo in the new release and wondered what they’re all about.

Famundo has an extraordinary number of view permissions for both the family version and the organizational version. The icons were added so that you would have a quick visual indication of the view permission for any particular item in Famundo.

If you put your mouse over the icon, you will get a little pop-up that tells you what exactly it means. But I’ll describe here what they stand for.

This item is Private

This item is viewable by Parents or Administrators only

This item is viewable by Parents and other Adults in the family

This item is viewable by the entire Family or Staff

This item is viewable by Family and Friends or Staff and Members

This item is viewable by the Public

A day in the life of a professional organizer

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Thu, 24 May 2007 04:06:00 GMT

Famundo is all about personal and family organization, so it goes without saying that I have been following the work of Valentina Sgro for some time now.

Valentina is a member of the Golden Circle of the National Association of Professional Organizers and a Certified Chronic Disorganization Specialist. She is the owner of SGRO Consulting, Solutions for Getting Really Organized.

Her first book, Organize Your Family’s Schedule…In No Time, was an iParenting Media Award winner.

Her latest book, Patience and the Porsche, is a novel about the life of a professional organizer.

Patience “Pat” Oaktree is the self-proclaimed most successful professional organizer in the State. Never mind that she’s borderline chronically disorganized herself and can’t seem to start, much less complete, some of her own projects. She uses her silent mantra of “Patience, Patience” to remind herself not to get frustrated.

Now I know what you must be thinking. A professional organizer? What could possibly be interesting about a professional organizer? But think about it. When someone hires an organizer, they are basically opening their life to a complete stranger.

Hmmm…this could be interesting.

Check it out.

Scratch - Computer Programming for Kids

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Wed, 16 May 2007 03:29:00 GMT

This is VERY cool. Scratch is a FREE programming language that is designed specifically for kids ages 8 and up.

Developed at MIT, Scratch makes it easy to create interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art—and share them on the web.

It works on both PCs and Macs.

Download it here!
