No wunder our kidz ar doing so purli in skool

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Tue, 18 Jul 2006 19:36:00 GMT

According to the American Literacy Council, English Spelling Stardards are a Primary Cause or Illiteracy. According to the ALC, there are currently 36 million illiterate US citizens and English is the third hardest language to learn after Chinese and Japanese.

They claim that by “normalizing” English spelling, we could spend our teaching resources on other subjects such as reading, math and science. So “tough” would become “tuf”, “thought” would become “thaut” and so on.

Spelling is not a subject taught in Spain, Russia, Germany or other European countries. At least we don’t have to worry about those pesky masculine, feminine, and neuter nouns. That never made any sense to me.

There is some truth in what they say, but I’m not sure if this really to be concerned about. And could you imagine what a mess the transition would be? Have a look at the slideshow above, it should make for interesting conversation at your next cocktail party.

And I always thought it was Arnold Schwarzenegger’s fault that our kids can’t read.

Famundo's new security explained

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Tue, 18 Jul 2006 00:56:31 GMT

A number of users have asked me to explain Famundo’s new security a bit more.

It is really pretty simple. There are now several ways to control who can edit and view your calendars, calendar categories, events, documents and messages:

Schedule for: who it is assigned to (this can be more than one user)

   Edit access: who can edit

   View access: who can view.

For example, if I want to create a private event that only I can edit and view, I would select the following options:

   Schedule for = myself

Edit access = Private (Assigned To Only)

View access = No One (Not Shared)

If I want to create a private event that only I and a few other staff members can edit and view, I would select the following options:

Schedule for = myself and the others on my staff I want to give edit/view access

Edit access = Private (Assigned To Only)

View access = No One (Not Shared)

If I want to create an event that can be edited by anyone on our staff and viewed by the public:

   Edit access = All Staff

   View access = Public (Everyone)

If I want to create an event the can be edited by anyone on our staff and viewed by the members of our organization only:

   Edit access = All Staff

   View access = Members Only

Famundo’s new Security offers a range of edit/view options. More information can be found in our Help file.

Finally, the '5-second rule' get its due

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Mon, 17 Jul 2006 23:08:47 GMT

You remember the ‘5-second rule’. “If a piece of food falls on the ground and you pick it up before 5-seconds, it is safe to eat.”?

Well there has finally been some actual scientific research done on this rule. RapidWire has the following article The 5-Second Rule — Fact Or Fiction?.

Naturally, there seems to be a lot of disagreement within the scientific community.

Until this whole thing is resolved, I’ll continue to use the ‘5-second rule’ as my guideline. ;)

Famudo now supports Safari

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Mon, 17 Jul 2006 13:45:39 GMT

Since there are many of our users that are using Macs, we have spent some time making sure Famundo is compatible with Safari.

Although, Mac users have the ability to use Famundo with either FireFox or Netscape, we felt it important to support Apple’s native browser.

I’m pleased to announce that we are now 99% Safari compatible. The only issue we are still having is dragging and dropping of events in the calendar.

This will be resolved in our next release, along with many more enhancements.

Any thoughts about the whole KinderStart bouhahah?

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Sat, 15 Jul 2006 01:20:27 GMT

Anyone have any thoughts on the legal issues between KinderStart and Google?

KinderStart, as you may know, is a search engine dedicated to children, parenting and other family issues, whi has file a complaint against Google for their low search rankings.

“The parenting site alleges that Google engaged in anticompetitive behavior in violation of antitrust laws by removing a competitor from its top search pages in order to maintain its dominance in the search market. During his questioning of the parties, the issue of antitrust appeared to resonate with the judge, who indicated he understood the point KinderStart was trying to make.”

To be honest, I really haven’t looked into this issue very much. Would love to get reader’s thoughts on this.
