We are showing off Famundo for Organizations this weekend at the National PTA Conference in Phoenix, AZ. (boy is it HOT here, 109 today!!!)
There are a lot of cool exhibitors here and I’ll report on them over the next few days.
This one really caught my eye, CommonSenseMedia.org is a site that offers reviews on all kinds of media, films, TV, games, web sites, music, books and more, by families, kids and the CommonSenseMedia editors.
It is a really good resource.
I like their mission statement, it really says it all:
“To give parents, educators, and kids a choice and a voice about the media they consume.”
They also have a blog, CommonSenseMediaBlog which has very timely articles.

Boy, this is an interesting story, Boston’s NPR station, WBUR, has an audio presentation on Extreme Parenting
“In America’s high-paced, strive-for-success-go-for-the-gold-meritocracy, it’s never too soon to start jockeying for advantage. That explains in part a booming industry that has many parents convinced that Mozart and inter-active alphabet games are as vital to their infants’ development as a mother’s milk.”
Some of the companies mentioned are The Baby Einstein Company, Brainy Baby, and BabyFirstTV.
I guess when my kids were babies, we were just hearing about things like this.
It seems that there has also been a number of complaints about what these companies are offering.
Here is the Campaign for Commercial-Free Childhood website, which documents the complaints that have been filed with the Federal Trade Commissionabout these companies.

I had to laugh when I read the titles for these two new books, “Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay – and Other Things I Had To Learn as a New Mom” and “Daddy Needs a Drink: An Irreverent Look at Parenting From a Dad Who Truly Loves His Kids – Even When They’re Driving Me Nuts,” certainly give the impression that parenting requires a lot more than a healthy dose of stamina.
“Sippy Cups” is by Stefanie Wilder-Taylor, a Los Angeles writer and comedian, is described as “empathetic straight dirt on parenting, tackling everything from Mommy & Me classes, written in busy Mom-friendly short essays.
“Daddy Needs a Drink” author Robert Wilder (no relation to Wilder-Taylor), a Santa Fe, New Mexico high-school teacher, shares warmly funny stories on everything from sleep deprivation to why school-sponsored charities can turn otherwise sane adults into blithering and begging idiots.
These sound like couple of good summer reads to have along with your tall Mai Tai!
