Parent's Place

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Wed, 02 Aug 2006 02:31:04 GMT

The Journal News in White Plains, New York, has started a new parenting blog by staff writers Julie Moran Alterio and Gayle T. Williams.

“Parents’ Place is a hangout for openly discussing the A’s to Z’s of raising a child in the Lower Hudson Valley. From deciding when to stop using a binky to when to let your teenager take driving lessons, Parents’ Place is here to let us all vent, share, and most of all, learn from each other. Leading the discussion are Julie Moran Alterio, a business reporter and mom of a 1-year-old daughter, and Gayle T. Williams, a Life & Style editor and mom to two preteen sons.>

Excellent Parenting Resource

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Wed, 02 Aug 2006 02:15:27 GMT

The Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies has an excellent free resource on parenting, including links to other parenting resources.

“The Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies web site is designed to enrich your life through behavioral science. Intellectual knowledge may make many things more interesting or understandable, or give you a new perspective on them. Practical applications may help you solve everyday dilemmas or merely make things easier and more fun, and, hopefully, may also provide assistance with more serious problems.”

Fatherhood may be good for the brain

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Thu, 27 Jul 2006 13:40:29 GMT

According to an recent study done by Yevgenia Kozorovitskiy and her colleagues from Princeton University, a man’s brain goes through many of the same changes as a woman’s does when they have a child.

“Fatherhood produces changes in very high-cognitive-level areas,” said Kozorovitskiy at a meeting of the Forum of European Neurosciences in Vienna, Austria, last week.

You can read more about this study here.

Magazines look to social networking sites

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Thu, 27 Jul 2006 13:12:00 GMT

According to this article on paidcontent.org, “Magazines Look For Ways To Mesh Social Networking With Built-In Community”, more and more mainstream parenting magazines are taking the social networking as a mean of broadening their readership.

I quote some examples:

- Conde Nast is working on a teen destination meant to difer from MySpace and its own online efforts like TeenVogue.com.

- A 2007 redesign of MarthaStewart.com will add personalization and community features.

- Time Inc.’s Parenting Group launched momconnection.com in 2003. It has about 6,000 users who can post messages or take part in surveys and product tests. This month, personal profile pages are being added with photo posting to follow in August. It sounds like a small number but wasn’t meant to be extend the brand or add a revenue stream.

- Also on the parenting front, Meredith Corp. is expanding interactivity on americanbaby.com and increasing multimedia. A recent contest encouraged readers to send in video.

- Parents.com, due for launch in 2007, will be a parenting portal connecting Parents, Child, Family Circle and the American Baby Group.

Parenting Adolescents

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Sun, 23 Jul 2006 23:29:00 GMT

Denise Whitmer has a great column over at About.com called Parenting of Adolescents

There are a ton of blogs and columns that offer advise for parents of babies and toddlers, but very little for parents of teens and pre-teens.

Lord knows, we need all the help we can get.

Is there a boy crisis?

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Sat, 22 Jul 2006 03:26:45 GMT

Very interesting article in TheWeek magazine.

“Nearly everyone involved in education—and the statistics bear them out. Girls have opened a big gap over boys in reading and writing skills, and that gap grows wider the longer they are in school. In many high school honors and advanced-placement courses, girls outnumber boys five to one. Boys’ share of college admissions has dropped to 42 percent and is declining steadily. Boys also are responsible for 80 percent of school discipline problems. They are almost twice as likely as girls to be suspended from school, while four out of five high school dropouts are male. And their problems extend far beyond the classroom. Boys are considerably more likely to commit violent crimes and go to prison. The suicide rate for boys has tripled since the 1970s, and is now four to six times the rate for girls.”

There are a number of recently released book that delve into this phenomenon in detail:

Christina Hoff Sommers’ The War Against Boys and William Pollack’s Real Boys are two worth noting.

A "right of passage"

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Fri, 21 Jul 2006 00:44:03 GMT

Nice article over at Mamatude on the teenage “right of passage” of sitting in the passenger seat of the car.

Although I our 14-year old relishes the fact that he can now sit in the front seat, I would feel much safer with him in the rear.

And our 11-year old is constantly trying to sneak into the front seat. Must be some right of passage.

Sleep over camps!

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Fri, 21 Jul 2006 00:31:51 GMT

Good article over at 11d on sleepover camps

We sent our 14-year old to two sleepover camps this summer so far, but they were both community service oriented. One was to work with Navajo kids in Utah, the other was involved with his Boy Scout Eagle project in Hawaii.

We plan to send him to the CTY trip to France next summer.

Lists and more lists

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Fri, 21 Jul 2006 00:22:45 GMT

Yes, we all have to keep list to help us maintain our sanity. This very cool site, MomAdvice has a lot of good advice for moms and dads also. They have a very good selection of lists for parents, such as Diaper Bag Check list, etc.

Famundo for Families will have an extensive list manager, where families can create planning lists, to-do lists, even shopping lists specific to the stores you normally shop at.

This should be a big help to any active family.

Sign up to be notified when Famundo for Families will be released by going here.

This is cute!

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Fri, 21 Jul 2006 00:07:32 GMT

I remember taking my kids to Chinese restaraunts when they were younger and getting the chop sticks with the rubber bands around them so they could pick up their food.

Now, via Perpetual Kid, we have Kid Sticks.

“These soft, washable, food-safe hinges really keep your chopsticks in line and add an element of fun to the dining experience. They come with a nice set of melamine chopsticks, or you can use them with your own. And they’re not just for kids either – The Perpetual Kid uses them!”

Lots of other cool things for kids on their site. Check them out.
