Get your kid's passport NOW!

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Sun, 30 Jul 2006 22:48:45 GMT

Take it from me, if you’re planning to travel overseas with your kids this summer, don’t wait unil the last minute to get their passports!

A friend of my son was planning to travel to China with his parents this summer. He recounted the nightmare experience he had in getting his passport and it reminded me of a similar nightmare experience we had when we were preparing to take our kid’s to Paris last spring.

Most important thing! Do not take an abstract of your kid’s birth certificate, take an actual certified copy.

In both cases, with my son and his friend, we arrived at the local post office with abstract in hand. Of course, the post office only offers passports during the time when the kids are in school, so you have to take them out of school.

Anyway, we were turned away and had to request a certified copy of our son’s birth certificate.

When we finally got it, time was running short. We had to go to the Federal Building here in Los Angeles, to get the passport in time for our trip. After parking a mile away from the Federal Building, we got there with minutes left before they closed the doors. We walked in and the told us we couldn’t take our cell phones into the building.

So I ran back a mile to the car and left the cell phone there and a mile back to joins my family in line. When we finally got to the front of the line and they asked if we had an appointment. We said no. They said we needed an appointment and they gave us a number to call.

Great, except our phone were a mile away back in the car.

So I ran back to the car, called them, got an appointment, and – end of story -, we got our son’s passport.

Trust me, you don’t want to go through this stress. Plan early.

Cash for coins

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Wed, 26 Jul 2006 01:12:19 GMT

This is really good advise from ParentHacks.

I’ve had these coffee cups full of change lying around the house for a long time. I used to have time to roll them up and take them into the bank, but that was before kids.

I always avoided Coinstar because the took so much. now you can ge the entire amount of your coins in gift ceetificates for Amazon, Starbucks, etc.

Now I can’t wait to fill up more change cups.

This looks really interesting

Via Denise Whitmer’s latest column is about a book that helps you organize your family, Valentina Sgro’s Organize Your Family’s Schedule In No Time (In No Time).

From her bio on the Cue Publishing website, “In 1985, Valentina Sgro left her 12-hour-a-day position at a major law firm for a 16-hour-a-day job of childrearing and household management. In 1989, realizing that things were out of control, Val began organizing her family¿s life. In 1997, Val founded SGRO Consulting, Solutions for Getting Really Organized. She is on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Professional Organizers and is a Certified Chronic Disorganization Specialist and a member of the National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization. She currently resides in Cleveland, Ohio.”

Of course, Famundo for Families is precisely about organizing and controlling the chaos of today’s hectic lifestyle.

I’ve ordered my copy of Srgo’s book to see just how Famundo can work with her concepts.

Lists and more lists

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Fri, 21 Jul 2006 00:22:45 GMT

Yes, we all have to keep list to help us maintain our sanity. This very cool site, MomAdvice has a lot of good advice for moms and dads also. They have a very good selection of lists for parents, such as Diaper Bag Check list, etc.

Famundo for Families will have an extensive list manager, where families can create planning lists, to-do lists, even shopping lists specific to the stores you normally shop at.

This should be a big help to any active family.

Sign up to be notified when Famundo for Families will be released by going here.

This is cute!

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Fri, 21 Jul 2006 00:07:32 GMT

I remember taking my kids to Chinese restaraunts when they were younger and getting the chop sticks with the rubber bands around them so they could pick up their food.

Now, via Perpetual Kid, we have Kid Sticks.

“These soft, washable, food-safe hinges really keep your chopsticks in line and add an element of fun to the dining experience. They come with a nice set of melamine chopsticks, or you can use them with your own. And they’re not just for kids either – The Perpetual Kid uses them!”

Lots of other cool things for kids on their site. Check them out.

Piggish Behavior

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Wed, 19 Jul 2006 01:59:41 GMT

Via ParentHacks, an article by MetroDad was brought to my attention, Building a kinder, gentler world…one baby at a time!

I mean, it it just me or has society just gotten a lot ruder recently. The country seem as divided as it was during the Vietnam war.

On that note, a friend of mine has started a new site called Piggy Industries that deals some of the more visible piggish behavior in today’s world. Check it out.

Finally, the '5-second rule' get its due

Posted by Richard Kuhlenschmidt Mon, 17 Jul 2006 23:08:47 GMT

You remember the ‘5-second rule’. “If a piece of food falls on the ground and you pick it up before 5-seconds, it is safe to eat.”?

Well there has finally been some actual scientific research done on this rule. RapidWire has the following article The 5-Second Rule — Fact Or Fiction?.

Naturally, there seems to be a lot of disagreement within the scientific community.

Until this whole thing is resolved, I’ll continue to use the ‘5-second rule’ as my guideline. ;)
