Parenting in the 21st Century

Michele Anciaux Aoki makes some excellent points in her Seattle Post-Intelligencer blog.

“Parenting in the 21st Century is larger than the “nuclear family.” It means caring for all of the children we have the opportunity to connect with in our lives as if they were our own. And when it comes to our own children, it means developing in them the commitment to care about others rather than focusing on themselves.”

I feel very fortunate that our kid’s schools that are extremely communicative with the families. I suspect there are many schools where parents don’t hear a word until grade time or when their kids are in trouble.
